Daycare centers and daycare facilities for your children in Luxembourg

Safe childcare in Luxembourg

Daycare centers and daycare facilities are the most traditional way to arrange childcare in Luxembourg. There are nearly 450 state-approved facilities in the country. Each one caters to specific needs.

Whether the daycare centers are private or public, you’re sure to find a high-quality center near you that meets your criteria for childcare.

All daycare centers must be state-approved to provide childcare. To do so, they must meet a number of criteria: a mandatory garden or outdoor space, separate areas based on age, a minimum number of square meters per child, qualified staff suited to the child’s age, multilingualism, and more. The differences between childcare facilities will lie in the food served, the educational approach, the equipment provided, the hours of operation, and, above all, the support services.

Be sure tocarefully review the descriptions of each facility. Above all, don’ t hesitate to visit several of them to choose the childcare facility best suited for your child.

Municipal daycare centers, drop-in centers, and public after-school programs

Municipalities offer parents public childcare services through after-school care centers. Priority is given to residents of the municipality whose parents are both employed.

This care is available on school days and during school breaks, with a lunch service provided.

In some municipalities, you’ll find “Bësch Spillschoul” or “Bësch Klass,” which are nature-oriented daycare centers or classes. Your children will be cared for in settings focused on outdoor play and exploring nature.

School After-School Care Service - City of Luxembourg

The City of Luxembourg’s after-school centers provide care for school-age children (ages 3–12) enrolled in the Luxembourg school system within the city of Luxembourg. After school, children are cared for at the after-school center in their neighborhood. The centers also operate during school vacations.

Other Childcare Options in Luxembourg

Looking for a more personalized childcare arrangement? Need childcare on an occasional basis (due to illness, travel, an outing, etc.)? Luxembourg also offers a wide range of services, including family assistants, nannies, and babysitters.

Childcare provided by a childcare assistant in Luxembourg

Parental assistance involves the regular, paid care of minor children, day or night. This type of care offers flexibility for parents who work irregular hours. Traditional childcare facilities, such as daycare centers, daycare homes, and after-school care centers, offer more standardized schedules.

All child care providers must hold a license from the Ministry of National Education, Children, and Youth. The Dageselteren agency provides training for child care providers.

Arcus ASBL, Service Krank Kanner Doheem (specifically for sick children), and the AFP-Solidarité-Famille association are among the best-known providers of parental assistant services.

Nanny, family helper, babysitter, or housekeeper to care for your children

In Luxembourg, there are several websites that connect parents with babysitters and nannies. Important! If you hire a nanny, you must register her with the Joint Social Security Center (CCSS). See below.

Local municipal offices often maintain an up-to-date list of babysitters available to care for your child in your municipality. Check with them.

You’ll find many nanny and babysitter listings in the classifieds on www.petitweb.lu, www.webnounou.com, and www.baby-sitter.lu.

Does your teenager want to become a babysitter? AFP Solidarité-Famille trains future babysitters.

Au Pairs to Care for Your Children in Luxembourg

An au pair remains an excellent childcare solution. This option is worth considering if you have a place to house them for a fixed period. The au pair is a full member of your family.

The au pair agrees to perform light, routine household tasks within the family. In return, you provide room and board and allow them to take language classes. You must also provide them with an allowance in the form of pocket money, as well as days off.

The au pair program is highly regulated to prevent any abuse. Even though it is not governed by the Labor Code, there are rights and responsibilities for both parties. Here , we explain the steps you need to follow to host an au pair in your home.

Mandatory registration of your nanny or domestic worker

Remember that you must register your live-in childcare provider with the Joint Social Security Center. An initial registration must be filed, indicating the hourly wage you pay them, to enroll your employee in the social security system.

Financial assistance for childcare in Luxembourg

Approved childcare facilities, CSA providers

If you choose a state-approved childcare provider that is a "CSA provider," you may be eligible for financial assistance for your children’s care.

Whether public or private, these childcare facilities—which may include daycare centers, nurseries, or childminders—are accredited by the Ministry of National Education, Children, and Youth.

To qualify for the "CSA provider" designation, childcare facilities must meet specific quality standards across a number of criteria. In addition to financial assistance, this designation also serves as a guarantee of reliability and quality for parents

As such, you’ll benefit from reduced rates on your bills. Depending on your income, government financial assistance will be deducted from your bills until your child turns 12 .

Multilingual education in Luxembourg for children aged 1 to 4

Children aged 1 to 4 enrolled in an accredited facility receive 20 hours of free multilingual instruction per week for 46 weeks a year. This helps your children become familiar with French and Luxembourgish from a very young age.

However, the child’s native language is not neglected. It is integrated into the educational programs offered to children and families. Ask the facilities you visit for more information.

Multilingualism and a multicultural environment for children in daycare centers are central to the facilities’ priorities.
