Oldtimer versus Youngtimer
Differences between an Oldtimer and a Youngtimer
To be considered an Oldtimer, a vehicle must be more than 30 years old from its date of first registration. It must also be kept in a condition close to its original state, without major modifications or modernizations. Oldtimers are prized by collectors for their historical value and rarity.
A youngtimer vehicle is between 20 and 30 years old. These cars could be described as pre-collection vehicles. Although still relatively modern, youngtimers are mainly appreciated for their potential to become oldtimers. They often combine interesting performance with a certain vintage charm. Youngtimers are more affordable than oldtimers in terms of price.
Today, more than 12,000 Oldtimers and 15,000 Youngtimers are on the roads in Luxembourg. Want to find out more? You can find more information about classic cars on the oldtimer.lu website .
Insuring a vehicle over 20 years old in Luxembourg
In Luxembourg, there are specific insurance policies for oldtimers. These insurance policies are often offered at advantageous rates since they cover vehicles that are generally driven infrequently. Owners mainly participate in events and occasional drives.
Conversely, youngtimers do not always benefit from the same favorable conditions. Their insurance is often similar to that for standard vehicles, but with a specific valuation based on their rarity or condition.
Technical inspection in Luxembourg for vintage vehicles
Oldtimers benefit from a lighter technical inspection, every 5 years instead of every 2 years for a standard vehicle or a youngtimer.
Other important things to know about classic cars
If you want to purchase a vehicle that is over 20 years old in Luxembourg, here are some important things to know.
Firstly, historic vehicles or oldtimers can be registered with a special "H" (historic) license plate. This registration is advantageous. However, it requires the vehicle to be used only for specific events, trips, or occasional journeys. In addition, the vehicle must remain in its original condition.
Before buying an older vehicle, it is strongly recommended that you have a technical inspection carried out by a professional or an organization such as the ACL. They will check the overall condition of the vehicle (chassis, engine, corrosion, etc.). This will allow you to better assess its real value and avoid any unpleasant surprises.
Also make sure that the seller has the certificate of conformity and maintenance documents. An up-to-date maintenance log increases confidence in the vehicle, especially for youngtimers.
In addition, be aware that older vehicles sometimes require specific parts that are difficult to find. Find out about availability and potential costs before purchasing.
