LuxembourgProtecting nature is a shared responsibility. Every spring, residents of Luxembourg’s villages come together for a major cleanup of their local environment.
So now that the sun is back and the first flowers are blooming, why not take this opportunity to take care of our environment?
In many municipalities, the "Aktioun Grouss Botz" or Big Cleanup takes place between March and April each year. Citizens are called upon to participate in cleaning the streets and municipal paths. This responsible initiative encourages residents to take care of their environment and natural spaces to make the country cleaner and more pleasant to live in.
Armed with trash bags and gloves, families, organizations, and schools comb public roads, country paths, and forests to collect greasy paper, cans, cigarette butts, and other trash. In short, it’s a massive spring cleaning effort on a village or town scale.
Beyond being a civic and eco-friendly initiative, the "Grouss Botz" is also an opportunity to meet and get to know other residents in your municipality. Usually, the municipal administration then offers lunch or a snack to the brave souls who brave the weather—which isn’t always pleasant in early spring in Luxembourg. But what a sense of satisfaction in the end!
Check with your local municipality to participate in this large-scale community cleanup. You might even be able to join the Grouss Botz in a neighboring village.

Cleaning up the outdoors is best done when the trees haven’t yet fully leafed out. However, be careful not to disturb birds and animals during nesting or breeding season. Let’s all work together to take care of our planet and Luxembourg’s wonderful natural environment!
