How to register your vehicle in Luxembourg?

How to register your vehicle in Luxembourg?

You have just arrived in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, moved into your new home, and enrolled your children in their new school. What's next? Your vehicle. You will need to have your driver's license recognized, insure your vehicle, and register it in Luxembourg.

In this article, we tell you everything you need to know about the steps to take to register your vehicle. Then you'll be free to drive around legally!

Reserve your brand new license plate

From the date you move to the Grand Duchy, your vehicle must have a brand new license plate in order to drive on the country's roads. You have six months to change your plate , which can be personalized.

New registration number: how to proceed

Go to MyGuichet.lu to reserve your license plate number. Please note that there are two types of license plate numbers:

  • Standard numbers: preferred by drivers who do not have specific requirements, these numbers consist of two letters and four digits and follow the order of the registration numbers available. They are assigned to a vehicle for its entire lifetime.
  • Personalized numbers: drivers who care about the look of their car prefer to choose an original license plate. This belongs exclusively to its owner, who has the option of transferring it to another driver. However, you will have to pay an additional €50 in tax stamps compared to a standard serial number and €24 if you need to have the same license plate reissued.

Personalized registration: what steps do you need to take?

Want to stand out with a custom license plate? Drivers love this popular practice in Luxembourg and proudly display their vehicles.

Praised for their aesthetic appeal, personalized plates also have another advantage: they make it easier to remember the number and identify your vehicle when parked in a parking lot in the Grand Duchy. A solution that makes your life easier!

Want a 4-digit number? You'll have to wait on a waiting list because they've all been allocated. It's up to you to be creative and come up with a plate that isn't a victim of its own success. A word of advice: suggest a 5-digit number or a combination of 2 letters and 4 digits. With a bit of luck, the plate you want won't have been allocated yet.

Request a registration certificate

Have you reserved your plate on MyGuichet? Now it's time to apply for a registration certificate from the Société nationale de circulation automobile (SNCA). This organization is responsible for all vehicle registrations in Luxembourg under the authority of the Luxembourg Ministry of Transport.

How do I obtain a registration certificate?

By logging on to the SNCA website, you can obtain the application form for a registration certificate. Once completed, the document can be returned by mail or dropped off at the SNCA reception desk. It is also possible to meet with them and make an appointment via their website.

At the same time, you must take out car insurance with an insurance company approved in Luxembourg. To certify that your vehicle is legally registered in the country, it must be cleared through customs by issuing a 705 sticker. This applies to all cars purchased abroad that have traveled more than 6,000 km and were first registered more than six months ago.

To do this, visit one of the three Customs and Excise Administration centers located in Gasperich, Grevenmarcher, or Diekirch.

Here is the list of documents you will need to prepare for your application to the SNCA:

  • The completed and signed application form for a registration certificate;
  • A copy of your identity document;
  • The invoice for your vehicle;
  • The insurance certificate issued by an insurer approved in Luxembourg;
  • The 705 sticker (customs paper)
  • The valid technical inspection certificate for your vehicle;
  • The European certificate of conformity for vehicles registered on orafter February1, 2016;
  • The foreign registration document;
  • A €50 "chancellery duty" tax stamp
  • Optional: an additional €50 stamp (if you have opted for a personalized license plate).

The final step after obtaining your registration certificate is to contact an approved manufacturer to have your new plates made. You will find the list on the SNCA website.

For more information on registering your vehicle and the procedures involved, visit the SNCA website.
