Event description

Lovers' Day in Luxembourg

As in many countries around the world, February 14 is Valentine's Day. Don't miss the chance to celebrate your lover. All gifts and thoughts are welcome. The most important thing is to show that you're thinking of your loved one.

What's the best way to celebrate Valentine's Day with your sweetheart? Take her out to dinner. But be careful: restaurants are packed on this day. Book well in advance.

More original, LCTO organizes a Love Promenade in Luxembourg. Couples in love are invited to take a guided tour of the city, complete with love stories. Information from the Luxembourg Tourist Office.

Looking for a more original outing? See our outings/leisure pages.

Want to buy a personalized gift? Stores celebrate Valentine's Day in a big way. A month before the event, you'll see sales incentives to find the perfect gift for your loved one. Find our shopping pages here.

Would you like to give a gift of flowers? Flower stores or even petrol stations can offer you pretty bouquets.

Do you love giving flowers? Don't forget May 1st and its bouquets of lilies of the valley.

The origins of Valentine's Day

The origins of Valentine's Day seem rather vague. There are several versions.

In ancient Roman tradition, people celebrated Lupercus, the god of fertility, on February 13, 14 and 15. During these celebrations, men pursued women with goatskins to ensure their fertility...

A second version attributes the origin of Saint Valentine's Day to the story of Valentine of Terni. This priest officiated in Rome. He was beheaded on February 14 269 for marrying Christian couples. This was forbidden by the Emperor, who wanted to force men to go to war.

Britain began celebrating lovers in the 14th century. Birds were thought to mate on February 14. The poet Otho de Grandson launched the Valentine's Day tradition by sending sweet nothings to his beloved on that day. The tradition was later adopted by the French court, before spreading to the rest of the world and to Luxembourg.
