Sandrine Pingeon sells her own fresh, local, and seasonal fruits and vegetables from the family farm in Munsbach (Schuttrange municipality). In collaboration with a few local suppliers, she also offers a wide range of high-quality organic products in addition to her locally grown fruits and vegetables: eggs, cheeses, cold cuts, breads, and more.

On-site, everyone fills their basket at very reasonable prices. Although a bit far from downtown, Sandrine and her baskets are well-known in Luxembourg. Renowned Luxembourgish chefs, including those with Michelin stars, come to her to stock up!
And Sandrine was named Personality of the Year 2018 by Gault&Millau Belux!
The little extra? The selection, the very friendly welcome, and the change of scenery.

Terra Coop and its community-based market garden concept

Terra Coop is an AMAP (Association for the Preservation of Small-Scale Farming) in Luxembourg, on Rue Eicherfeld.

By becoming a member of the association, you’ll receive a weekly basket filled with the harvest of the week (fruits, vegetables, root vegetables, herbs, etc.).

The products in your basket are fresh, organic, seasonal, and local, but the contents aren’t revealed until you place your order!

Le Chat Biotté and its bundles of organic vegetables

Le Chat Biotté also offers baskets of 100% organic fruits and vegetables (called “bio bottes” in reference to the brand name). These organic baskets are delivered directly to your home or workplace.

Le Chat Biotté offers almost exclusively local products from nearby farms. You’ll find three different types of boxes: the “energy bundle” consisting solely of fruit, the “vegetarian bundle” consisting solely of vegetables, and the “balance bundle” featuring both fruit and vegetables.

The service operates on a subscription basis (from one month to one year) and offers excellent value for money.

The little extra? The order includes recipes!

Growing Your Own Vegetables with Community Gardens

To meet the demand for gardens, the City of Luxembourg and an increasing number of municipalities are offering an original and innovative concept: community gardens!

Designed for people who don’t have a private garden, community gardens allow you to grow flowers, vegetables, herbs, and fruit. Each community garden consists of a “shared” area, as well as several “private” plots. These plots can be cultivated alone, with family, or with friends. The individual plots measure approximately 4 meters by 2 meters and allow for the cultivation of various plants.

Farming is done in an eco-friendly, environmentally responsible way. Pesticides and chemical fertilizers are prohibited, as are GMOs. Compost bins are also available.

Exclusively reserved for residents of the neighborhoods where they are located, these gardens are designed with sustainable agriculture in mind. The goal is also to foster a friendly atmosphere among friends and neighbors. Picnic tables are provided.

In addition, the City of Luxembourg offers every resident who rents a plot training provided by a professional gardener to help them make the most of their plot.

Check with your local municipality to see if plots are available.

You can also visit the Eise gaart website , the portal for community gardens in Luxembourg. The site features shared gardens in Luxembourg and explains how to join one. You’ll also find information on ecological gardening and a calendar of events in and around community gardens nationwide. Created in partnership with CELL – Center for Ecological Learning Luxembourg, the site is available in French, English, and German.

Buying in bulk in Luxembourg

Bulk shopping isn’t very widespread in Luxembourg yet, except of course at local markets. Some retailers even offer returnable containers to encourage reuse.

Nevertheless, more and more supermarkets and convenience stores are offering bulk product sections. You can stock up on both food and non-food items . Prices aren’t always lower than you might expect. Additionally, some meat or cheese counters will serve food in your own containers. Remember to bring them along with your reusable bags when you go shopping.

Zero-Waste Stores

As for stores specializing in zero-waste, note the wonderful fair-trade initiative of Buttek-Mosaïk in Filsdorf, run by volunteers. Open Monday through Thursday, the shop donates its profits to the association Action pour un Monde Uni.

Kilogram.lu is a social impact company based in Capellen. Orders can be placed online and delivered to your home or picked up at pickup points. Food jars are returnable. A store has just opened in Capellen.

Co-labor stores also offer bulk products.

Eco-friendly events and initiatives

Promoting green mobility and energy

Consuming more responsibly isn’t limited to food. To preserve our planet and reduce our ecological footprint, we can rethink how we get around by adopting sustainable mobility. There are many ways to get involved in preserving our planet.

Our energy consumption can also be greener. Luxembourg energy providers are increasingly offering clean energy. The Enovos Group supplies green electricity and climate-neutral natural gas throughout the Grand Duchy. Its subsidiary , Luxembourg Energy Office (LEO), also supplies the city of Luxembourg with green energy.

If you want to generate your own electricity, install solar panels. Substantial government subsidies are available. And with the third-party payment system set to take effect in 2026, you won’t even have to pay the subsidy portion upfront.

“Green Event” Labels

Under the leadership of the Ministry of the Environment, Climate, and Biodiversity, Luxembourg is committed to an eco-responsible approach, including in the organization of events. Organizers of events labeled “Green Event” commit to reducing the ecological footprint of the event in question.

The Duck Race is a “Green Event.” Don’t hesitate to join in!

Nature Cleanup Initiatives

If you care about the cleanliness of your environment, help create a cleaner natural environment by participating in the “Grouss Botz” or big cleanup. These events take place in the spring and are organized by the municipalities.

Repairing broken items

Want to give your broken items a second life but aren’t handy? “Repair Cafés” are a must-visit!

In addition to the friendly atmosphere, you’ll find volunteers there who can help you repair almost anything: appliances, furniture, bikes, toys, clothes, and more.

Check with your local municipality for more information.

Also check out the Long Live The Summer event at Luxexpo The Box, which promotes environmental commitment.
