Walferdange, a green and multicultural community

Located in the Alzette Valley, dominated by wooded hills, Walferdange is a green and multicultural community. The area is ideal for families because of its proximity to the city and its country character which makes the city very pleasant.

The municipality has made available dog parks, allowing pets and owners to get together. These are romping areas, not dog toilets. Everyone is asked to pick up after their pets.

Amenities

There are three public schools with modern structures in the municipality. They cover cycles 1, 2 and 3 in Béreldange and Helmsange, cycles 1, 2, 3 and 4 in Walferdange. A school pick-up service is available for parents to take their children to and from school. Please contact the commune for more information.

Two “Maisons Relais” in Walferdange and Béreldange offer a day care center to the children of the commune.

A small drawback linked to the geographical position of the municipality: traffic problems during rush hour in the direction of the capital, due to the only main street allowing access to the center of Luxembourg.

However, the connection between Walferdange station and the central station of Luxembourg allows a train ride of approximately 10 minutes, which offers an interesting alternative to the car.

You can also benefit from the services of the Flexibus, which takes you wherever you want to go in the municipality of Walferdange. Just call 45 minutes before and the shuttle will pick you up and drop you off at the desired location. A good idea to go to the nearby shopping center.

Leisure and tourism in the commune of Walferdange

As far as leisure and sports are concerned, such as soccer or tennis, Walferdange offers a great opportunity to get away from it all. Numerous associations offer the possibility to participate in gymnastics sessions.

Among the most remarkable installations is the 31 km long Alzette bicycle path that runs along the Alzette valley and links Bereldange to Ettelbruck. The Prince Henri Cultural Center can accommodate up to 800 people.

The commune of Walferdange would find its origin in the Celtic period. Gypsum mines have been detected on the territory of Walferdange, dating from the first settlers. They are of course no longer in operation.

Helmsange is home to the nature reserve Sonnebierg and an archaeological site with a Roman villa. The Roman villa is more than 100 meters long at the foot of the Sonnebierg. It consists of about fifty different pieces. Archaeological research has found many coins and a purse dating from the 3rd century BC. Several types of pottery have also been identified on the site, dating from the 4th to the 1st century BC.

The Sonnebierg is now home to almost 150 very rare plant species, including a dozen different orchid species. It is of course forbidden to pick them.

The Castle of Walferdange is of historical interest, where the Grand Ducal family stayed in the 19th century. The University Campus was previously established there, but has not held classes since 2015. The building is now used by the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth.
