Walferdange is a very pleasant town. It has many amenities.

Nurseries and schools

Three state schools with modern facilities are located in the commune. They cover cycles 1, 2 and 3 in Béreldange and Helmsange, and cycles 1, 2, 3 and 4 in Walferdange. A school bus service is available to parents. Shuttles take children to and from school. For more information, contact the commune.

The localCharlemagne school offers a traditional French education for children up to the age of 12.

Two "Maisons Relais" in Walferdange and Béreldange offer day-care centers for local children.

The commune also boasts a number of private crèches, ideal if you can't find a place in the communal structures.

Transport in Walferdange

Walferdange is well connected to Luxembourg City. Several bus routes criss-cross the commune.

Walferdange's geographical position between Luxembourg City and the road to the north of the country makes it a very busy thoroughfare. Traffic problems are common during rush hour on the way to the capital.

Walferdange station offers an interesting alternative to the car. The train journey to Luxembourg's main station takes approximately 10 minutes.

A P+R parking lot on Rue du Pont in Béreldange offers free public transport to the capital.

The commune now offers the Vel'Oh! self-service bicycle service, as do the capital and six other communes bordering Luxembourg City.

The Flexibus on-demand bus service is available to local residents. It takes you wherever you want to go in Walferdange. Just call 45 minutes in advance. The shuttle will pick you up and drop you off at the desired location.

Stores in Walferdange

Walferdange offers a wide range of local and international stores. 

Here you'll find stores for the home, beauty and hairdressing services, bakeries and other food outlets, garages and car services, bookshops, etc.

The Walferdange Shopping Center is a good place to stock up.

Leisure and tourism in Walferdange

Walferdange offers excellent leisure and sports facilities, including soccer and tennis. Several associations offer the opportunity to take part in other activities, including gymnastics.

The Alzette cycle path runs for 31 km along the Alzette valley from Béreldange to Ettelbruck.

The Prince Henri cultural center can accommodate up to 800 people.

The Château de Walferdange is of historical interest. The Grand Ducal family lived there in the 19th century. The Campus Universitaire used to be located here, but it has not been used for classes since 2015. The building is now used by the Ministère de l'Education nationale, de l'Enfance et de la Jeunesse.

The origins of Walferdange date back to Celtic times. Gypsum mines have been found in Walferdange, dating back to the first settlers. They are, of course, no longer in operation.

Roman sites can also be found here. At the foot of the Sonnebierg, a Roman villa stretches over 100 metres in length, with some 50 different rooms. Archaeological research has uncovered numerous coins and a purse dating from the 3rd century BC. Several types of pottery have also been found on the site, dating from the 4th to 1st centuries BC.
The Raschpëtzer walking trail in the Helmsange forest features several Roman wells, each several dozen meters long. Find out more about the history of Luxembourg.

Helmsange is home to the Sonnebierg nature reserve. Here you'll find around 150 very rare plant species, including a dozen different orchid species. It is, of course, forbidden to pick them.

Living in Walferdange, our opinion

Walferdange is a verdant, multicultural commune in the immediate vicinity of Luxembourg City. Situated in the Alzette Valley, Walferdange is dominated by wooded hills. It's a great place for family walks, even if it's a bit steep.

The area is ideal for families, thanks to its proximity to the city and its rural character. The town is very pleasant.
