Luxembourg, 15th best destination for expats
The latest InterNations study, Expat Insider 2018, has just been released. As last year, Luxembourg is one of the favourite destinations for expatriates and ranks 15th out of 68 countries studied! More than 18,000 expatriates from 178 different countries around the world responded to InterNations’ annual survey. We would like to give you some background information about living as an expatriate in Luxembourg.
First of all, among the expatriates interviewed in this study, the main reason for moving abroad, whatever the country is, is work and career prospects at 31%. The second reason is the choice of a new lifestyle at 29%. The family and the education of children were cited as 8% and 7% respectively.
What would be the reasons for expatriates to settle in Luxembourg, or even stay there? While 31% of the expatriates surveyed, regardless of the country of settlement, plan an expatriation period of less than 5 years, 19% plan to stay abroad for more than 5 years, and 32% plan to expatriate for an indefinite period of time.
Quality of life
Quality of life and above all security are the Grand Duchy’s main strengths, since Luxembourg is ranked first in terms of security and 17th for the quality of life in general. Health and well-being rank the country in 13th place, transport in 17th place, leading to a very honourable 25th place in terms of personal development.
Moreover, and despite a very high cost of living (61st place out of 68), expatriates consider that they benefit from an improvement of personal finances in Luxembourg (23rd place).
Working in Luxembourg
Employment is one of the positive factors for living in Luxembourg, which ranks 9th out of the 68 countries present in the study for work.Grand Duchy is indeed ranked first in terms of job security and 26th for career prospects. Similarly, the balance between work and leisure seems to satisfy expatriates, since Luxembourg is in the middle of the ranking with a 37th place.
Children and family
Luxembourg appears to be well ranked with a 16th place for the family aspect. The safety and well-being of children are highly praised since Luxembourg ranks 6th for security and 10th for well-being out of 68 countries. The 10th place for family life in general and the 15th place for family well-being confirm that Luxembourg is a very popular destination for families.
Education is not forgotten, since the Grand Duchy is awarded a 22nd place for the quality of education (the opportunity to learn several languages is a favourable element), while the costs related to education appear quite reasonable with a very honourable 12th place.
Easy to settle in
Luxembourg appears to be a rather easy country to settle in regarding administration steps to be taken. It takes a very nice 2nd place for the opening of a bank account, a 3rd place for the ease of carrying out the administrative procedures for registering your new residence, and also a 3rd place for understanding the local health system.
On the other hand, and despite the multiculturalism and the many languages spoken in the country, as well as the learning structures available, Luxembourg is only 31st regarding language, losing even 2 places compared to 2017! Should we see a link with the complexity of feeling at home in Luxembourg (34th place), as well as the difficulty felt in making new friends (52nd place out of 68), or even the lack of sympathy mentioned which results in a 45th place in 2018, in an improvement of 2 places compared to 2017.
Overall, Luxembourg is ranked 40th out of 60 countries in terms of the ease of settling there.
