Hospital treatment in Luxembourg: admissions

Hospital services in Luxembourg are of a high standard. Nursing staff are competent and speak several languages. Facilities are modern and well-equipped. Patient safety is one of the key features of Luxembourg's hospitals.

Emergency services in Luxembourg

In the event of a medical or life-threatening emergency, we recommend calling the European emergency number 112 beforehand. Depending on the patient's needs, the operator will dispatch the appropriate emergency services, which may include an ambulance to take you to the nearest hospital.

You can also go to hospital emergency services, if the situation requires it. Find out more about emergency services in Luxembourg.

In the absence of a medical emergency, and outside night-time hours, consult a doctor or a Maison Médicale before going to the emergency room.

Languages used in hospital departments

Luxembourg has three official languages: Lëtzebuergesch, French and German. The country's healthcare professionals and hospital staff speak at least one of these languages. English is also perfectly mastered. So it's very easy to make yourself understood as a foreigner arriving in Luxembourg.

Admissions to Luxembourg hospitals

In Luxembourg, you can go to hospital for a medical examination, a simple consultation, scheduled hospitalization or in an emergency.

For admission, including scheduled appointments, you will need to present yourself at the reception desk of the relevant department with proof of identity and proof of insurance and any supplementary insurance you may have .If you do not have health insurance, you will be asked to pay a deposit. You will receive the final invoice by post at a later date.

If you have medical records or prescriptions, it's also a good idea to bring them with you when you are admitted.

Minors may only be admitted with the authorization of a parent or guardian.

In the event of emergency admission, these administrative procedures may be completed at a later date.

Payment and reimbursement of hospital care

Hospitalization and medical treatment can be expensive in Luxembourg. So it's important to have valid health insurance cover, whether through your employer or a private policy. This will help you cover the costs of your hospitalization and medical treatment.

In the case of outpatient treatment, the patient pays the doctor directly on discharge, or sends the bill home. The patient must then submit a claim for reimbursement to the health insurance company.

In the event of hospitalization, the cost of the stay is normally paid by the CNS (tiers-payant). However, policyholders over the age of 18 must pay the daily contribution directly.

In addition, supplements for a superior room are not covered by health insurance. In such cases, the insured must first take out supplementary health insurance. Here's why.

For cross-border workers, please refer to CNS procedures.

Visiting a patient in hospital, clinic or maternity ward

Visitors are generally allowed in Luxembourg hospitals, but there may be restrictions. This was notably the case during the COVID-19 pandemic.

But there may also be other reasons for prohibiting outside visits to a hospitalized patient. Check with hospital departments in advance, and follow any guidelines or protocols in force.

Visiting hours for patients are strictly defined. Visitors must adhere to them, to allow patients to rest and nursing staff to do their work. Visits are generally only permitted in the afternoons. Check with the hospital beforehand.

Where can I get treatment in Luxembourg?
